West Africa - 10 key projects in the energy sector
Published on
In West Africa, 46% of the population lacks access to electricity. Access to energy remains a major challenge in the region, which is experiencing significant population growth, urbanization, and industrialization, all of which are driving demand sharply upward, with electricity needs projected to grow by 8.9% per year by 2040.
This situation is hindering human, economic, and social development, even though the region has considerable renewable energy potential.
In response to this challenge, the AFD Group supports African governments and the private sector in accelerating the energy transition and addressing a threefold imperative: environmental (reducing CO2 emissions), economic (creating local value), and social (ensuring universal access to affordable energy).
Because the realities of West Africa are diverse, this brochure highlights the wide range of solutions implemented by the AFD Group to accelerate access to clean and sustainable energy. Solar power plants, biomass facilities, hydroelectric dams, grid modernization, and mini-grid programs… Discover ten flagship projects illustrating the region’s energy transformation, from Senegal to Nigeria.
